My Journey with Integrity in Filmmaking
This year has been one of the most mind-boggling and defining in my journey as an indie filmmaker. I released an independent feature film ‘Echo 8’ on VOD, created a series of DIPG awareness videos, covered numerous events, produced a short horror film, and ran several outreach filmmaking programs for communities. I wear my ‘Indie’ badge with honor, cherishing the ability to create whenever I encounter people, stories, and moments that deeply resonate with me.
For filmmakers entrenched in systematic approaches, dependent on specific budgets and resources, I understand your challenges. I also perceive the frustration from some corners regarding my approach — making filmmaking accessible to communities — which can be viewed as disruptive by traditionalists, including dismissive film schools.
Nonetheless, actions speak louder than words.
As an indie filmmaker committed to integrity, I persist because I recognize the profound impact of my efforts, knowing they will bear meaningful fruit over time.
I’ve been an independent filmmaker since my early 20s, over 15 years ago. Despite the ups and downs, I always return to this craft, finding in it freedom, meaning, and purpose. My idols include Jackie Chan (whom I’ve met and worked with), Roger Corman (whom I worked with on “Fist of the Dragon”), Andrzej Bartkowiak (my mentor for the “Echo 8 Trilogy”), M. Night Shyamalan & James Wan (both a personal dream). Integrity has been a guiding principle throughout my career, particularly in the resource-constrained world of indie filmmaking where perseverance is constantly tested.
Upholding integrity isn’t always popular; speaking truth in a conformist world can be uncomfortable.
Through hundreds of videos, short films, and now feature films, I’ve seen that longevity in this industry hinges on integrity, distinguishing those who endure from those who falter.
Honesty and Authenticity
At the heart of filmmaking is storytelling. Maintaining honesty means staying true to the story, characters, and themes without succumbing to external pressures that may dilute it’s authenticity. It’s tempting to alter your stories to fit commercial trends or societal expectations. for myself, how many indie projects do I come across that oversexualise women, demoralise and stereotypes cultures because it fits a trend? As indie filmmakers we have the creativity and power to make empowering works and by avoiding stereotypes and misrepresentation.
Ethical Practices and Creative Integrity
Integrity in filmmaking includes fair and ethical treatment of all involved. This means the respectful treatment for cast and crew. Ethical practices build a positive working environment and contribute to the overall quality of the production. Transparency is key to maintaining trust with stakeholders and audiences. Good indie filmmakers are open about their production processes, budgets, and challenges. This honesty not only builds credibility but also fosters a collaborative spirit within the filmmaking community.
Staying true to the initial artistic vision ensures the final product is authentic and impactful. Striving for innovation and originality is a hallmark of integrity. Original content not only stands out but also adds unique value to the film industry.
Professionalism and Social Responsibility
Fulfilling commitments, meeting deadlines, and delivering promised quality are fundamental to professional integrity. Reliability fosters trust and respect among collaborators and audiences. Showing respect for collaborators, audiences, and critics is crucial. Valuing constructive feedback, even in the face of criticism, strengthens a filmmaker’s reputation and work.
Filmmakers have the power to influence society.
Aiming to create work that contributes positively, whether by raising awareness, educating, or inspiring change, is a responsible approach to filmmaking. Promoting a film honestly, without misleading information or exploitative tactics, is essential for maintaining integrity. Focusing on creating films with lasting value rather than short-term gains is another facet of integrity. Sustainable storytelling ensures that films remain relevant and impactful over time.
For the longevity of any indie filmmakers is to maintain integrity in their work, fostering trust and respect from audiences, peers, and the broader film community. Integrity is about creating meaningful, authentic, and impactful films that stand the test of time.
